Jul 18,  · (Author’s note and disclaimer: The following piece details my story of overcoming a serious and potentially-fatal mental illness, bipolar II, between the years of I .

He was diagnosed about 7 or 8 years ago, on meds for a while then we just ignored the problem thinking it would go away. Three years ago I left after a very bad manic episode and he would not seek any professional help. When I said I was leaving it turned into an even worse episode that landed him in jail for a DUI I think he was trying to kill himself with the use of the car. I left for two months and he did everything right. Got help, swore he would stay on meds, let me have my freedom, etc.

I thought I had to give it another shot for the man I loved, our dogs, cat and the life we had built together. I returned and we went to counseling and he saw his own doctor. They put him on Lithium and I started to think we may make it after all. I started to let my guard down and started trusting him again to be the man I thought I had married. Then slowly the bizarre well familiar to me and controlling behavior started to creep into our lives.

I do not think I noticed at first but my closest friends all on guard would ask me if he was on his meds. As time progressed, I started to sink back into my hole and things progressed to bad. Everything is my fault, I do not make enough money I do make a nice salary , he wants a new luxury car, he is God and everyone else is an idiot, etc. He has built a very good company from scratch and has managed to maintain his business success.

These obsessive bipolar thoughts may be a repeating song from the radio, scenarios such as a suicide scene or a replaying of events often negative ones , but obsessive thoughts seem to be the rule rather than the exception. Note that research bears this out indicating that people with bipolar disorder have higher rates of obsessive-compulsive disorder than the average population. Extreme Bipolar Thoughts It seems to me that simply by the virtue of extreme emotional experience, people with bipolar disorder think in the extreme quite frequently.

Everything feels like the end of the world catastrophizing. And, of course, there are all the thoughts that go along with these things. If our boyfriend looks at another girl he must be cheating. If we have a disagreement with a friend they must hate us. Not everyone jumps to the extremes, but people with bipolar seem to have that tendency.

Anxious Bipolar Thoughts Of course, because people with bipolar have jumped to the extremes — usually negative ones — we sure the heck worry about it once we get there.

Crazy has been my word for years. My word to despise, my word to prove wrong, my word to embrace, all depending on the day and the context of its application to my life. I DO suffer from mood swings, highs and lows, manic anxiety and haunting depression.

I have become acutely aware of my body and its warning signs in my 39 years on Earth. So I have chosen to try to isolate myself on those days. To go to the gym two three, four? Or to quarantine myself to my room, coping with suicidal ideations and crushing sadness. I know myself well enough to understand and trust I would never act on those thoughts, ever. I have five beautiful children I could never let down, and could never be without, but to convince someone else of that is a tough chore.
